The TG group had the pleasure of hosting a delegation from the biopharmaceutical company Alkermes earlier today. A fast-paced morning of talks were held in TBSI, where postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers alike presented their work to the company. This was followed by a lunch and poster session at which much fruitful discussion took place. The group included Tarek Zeidan, Principal Scientist at the company, who works in collaboration with second year group member Isabel Hegarty.
The Gunnlaugsson Group attended the Supramolecular Chemistry Ireland (SCI 2017) conference in Maynooth University yesterday. The conference, organised by former group member Dr Rob Elmes, brought together an array of international speakers for a jam-packed day of lectures and short talks.
Several members of the group presented their work at the poster session, with second year PhD student Hannah Dalton giving a flash talk on “Metallosupramolecular assemblies of a family of N,N,O–terdentate ligands”, work which was recently published in Crystal Growth and Design.
Many congratulations to Isabel Hegarty, who beat a tough field to win the prize for best poster, for her poster entitled “Lanthanide Directed Self-Assembly of a Series of btp Derivatives”
A. P. giving his lecture to the DU Werner Chemical Society
A. P. de Silva, longtime friend and former supervisor of Thorri, and professor at Queen’s University of Belfast, gave a lecture about his work on “Fluorescent sensing and logic systems” today for the first DU Werner Chemical Society talk of the year. Group members Hannah and Isabel – who are also committee members of the Society – helped organise the talk. A. P.’s work on fluorescent sensors has developed into a range of blood gas and electrolyte analysers, sales of which by Roche, OPTI Medical (for human health case) and IDEXX (for animal use) have surpassed $530 million, and saved countless lives. As always, it was both a pleasure and an honour to have A. P. as a guest at Trinity and an enjoyable and unique experience to participate to one of his talks. Looking forward to the next time!
