Many congratulations to Sachi, Bruno and David, who have had their paper on the generation of highly luminescent functional solid-state material, “Self-assembled bright luminescent hierarchical materials from a tripodal benzoate antenna and heptadentate Eu(III) and Tb(III) cyclen complexes” accepted in Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering (Front. Chem. Sci. Eng. 2019, DOI:10.1007/s11705-018-1762-3). This work, achieved in collaboration with the Prof. Wolfgang Schmitt research group here at TCD covers the use of self-assembly between cyclen-based lanthanide (Europium and Terbium) complexes and a tripodal ligand which yields a luminescent amorphous material (red and green respectively, as shown below) that can be used for the sensing of solvents such as MeOH, CH3CN and THF.
The annual Third Year Talks took place on Tuesday 29th May, so Bruno, Hannah and Isabel, as third year students had a chance of presenting their work. The event, sponsored by Eli Lilly, involved 38 students from TCD, UCD and DIT who presented their research in the Hamilton Building on the Trinity Campus.
Isabel talked about her btp-based metal ion complexes during the Inorganic Chemistry session; Hannah presented her work with bypiridine derivative complexes of d and f metal ions in the New Ligands session; while Bruno talked about his work on f metal ion complexes as indirect probes of peptidic phosphorylation in the Analysis of Biologic session.

Work at the Langmuir-Blodgett trough
Second year PhD student Bruno D’Agostino visited the University of Southampton last week as part of a collaboration with Dr Jon Kitchen on lanthanide-based Langmuir-Blodgett films. He also attended the day-long 2017 Southampton Supramolecular Symposium on Friday, which was organised by the Kitchen and Goldup groups in Southampton.
The Gunnlaugsson Group attended the Supramolecular Chemistry Ireland (SCI 2017) conference in Maynooth University yesterday. The conference, organised by former group member Dr Rob Elmes, brought together an array of international speakers for a jam-packed day of lectures and short talks.
Several members of the group presented their work at the poster session, with second year PhD student Hannah Dalton giving a flash talk on “Metallosupramolecular assemblies of a family of N,N,O–terdentate ligands”, work which was recently published in Crystal Growth and Design.
Many congratulations to Isabel Hegarty, who beat a tough field to win the prize for best poster, for her poster entitled “Lanthanide Directed Self-Assembly of a Series of btp Derivatives”
